Move your data to Any NAS (network folder)

Once you have your data out of the big services and cleaned up, it needs to live somewhere you control. This guide covers moving your archive to Any NAS (network folder).

Step by step

  1. Make a folder for it

    Create a share on the NAS for the library - photos, or archive, or whatever you will still understand in five years. Give your own account write access to it. If the NAS has a photo app of its own, check where that app expects files to live before choosing, because the wrong folder means the app never sees them.

  2. Map it as a drive

    Follow the note above so the share appears as an ordinary folder on your computer. Tick reconnect at sign-in on Windows if you will use it regularly. Prefer a wired connection for the first copy - a large library over wifi is measured in hours.

  3. Write the library straight to it

    Export from Muletto directly to the mapped drive, or copy the folders across afterwards. They are ordinary folders of ordinary files, so nothing on the NAS needs to understand Muletto for this to work.

  4. Verify by count and size

    Compare the number of files and the total size against the source. Network copies fail differently from local ones: a dropped connection can leave a folder that looks complete and is short by hundreds of files. Open a few photographs from different years as a sanity check.

  5. Let the NAS index it, if it has an app

    Most NAS photo apps need to read every file before showing anything, and on a large library that runs for hours. An app that looks empty shortly after copying is usually still working. Find its indexing status rather than guessing.

  6. Remember a NAS is not a backup

    It is one copy, in one building, on disks that were probably bought together. RAID keeps you running when a disk dies; it does nothing about fire, theft, ransomware or deleting the wrong folder. Use whatever backup tool the NAS ships with to copy to an external drive or another location, and test a restore before relying on it.

Worth knowing

SMB is the protocol both Windows and macOS speak. If the NAS offers AFP as well, ignore it - Apple deprecated it and SMB is the one that keeps working.
If the NAS has a photo app, its indexing is separate from the copy. The files being present and the app showing them are two different things.
